Etched Carnelian beads were created during the Indus Valley Civilization. Patterns were drawn on carnelian using natron extracted from plants, then fired at low temperatures of about 300 to 400 degrees Celsius. While these beads have been excavated from sites in Mesopotamia and Afghanistan, it is believed they were originally made in the Indus River Valley and transported via land and sea routes.
