Kraftwerk are among the early pioneers of electronic music, profoundly influencing the direction of UK pop-music in the 1980s. They paved the way for the emergent Electro & later Techno genres. Their influence also extended to the Disco & early Rap genres.
Hailing from Dusseldorf, Germany in the early 1970s, their early approach chimed with what UK journalists were to dub Krautrock, a phenomenon which seemed to be occurring all over Germany. Strange, experimental bands such as Can, Faust, Tangerine Dream & Kluster were pushing at new limits in the realm of electronic & rock/pop music, unfettered by the rock n’roll sensibilities of their UK/US counterparts.
Kraftwerk differed in that they saw themselves as primarily being engineers rather than musicians. Their music had melody, harmony & a characteristic robotic-rhythm but was achieved without any organic instrumentation. The result is a music that is minimal, clean & espouses technological themes. Notable albums include Autobahn (1974), Trans-Europe Express (1977), Die Mensch-Maschine (1978) & Computerwelt (1981).
