Jackie Mittoo was a central figure in Jamaican music from its formative years, leaving a lasting imprint as a musician, arranger and bandleader. A founding member of The Skatalites, he helped define the ska sound while also serving as musical director at Studio One, where his organ and piano work underpinned countless classic recordings.
Raised in Kingston and performing from childhood, Mittoo’s talent brought him to the attention of Coxsone Dodd, leading to his role in Jamaica’s foremost studio band. Following the breakup of The Skatalites, he continued to shape the island’s music through successive groups including The Soul Brothers, The Soul Vendors and later The Sound Dimension, guiding the transition from ska to rocksteady and into early reggae.
Alongside his work backing artists such as Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis, The Heptones and The Wailers, Mittoo also built a solo catalogue that highlighted his distinctive melodic touch and rhythmic sense. After relocating to Canada in the late 1960s, he remained in demand, returning to Jamaica and travelling to London to work with leading producers and vocalists.
‘Rides On’ brings together 1970s recordings that showcase Jackie Mittoo’s versatility and unmistakable feel, underlining why his sound remains foundational to Jamaican music history.
