These women’s shoes from the late Baroque period (ca. 1730–1740) are a rare surviving example of early 18th‑century English footwear, crafted in black silk with wooden heels and a leather sole. Shoes from this period in England often featured a robust, thick heel, and this pair reflects exactly that characteristic silhouette. During most of the year, aristocratic ladies lived on their country estates, travelling into town or to seaside resorts only for social events, shopping trips, or visits to their tailor or shoemaker — making well‑preserved shoes from this era exceptionally scarce.

The shoes are lined with leather and linen, showing authentic 18th‑century construction techniques and the refined craftsmanship typical of Baroque and early Georgian fashion. They remain in very good condition for their age, with two professionally repaired side areas and only minor rubbing to the sides and toes. Examples of English Baroque shoes in this level of preservation are extremely rare. The attached shoe buckles are later additions and not original to the shoes, and the decoration is not included.
