Description:
A collection of works by one of Sweden's most popular contemporary composers, Rolf Mattinson! Rolf Mattinson (1956-) was born in Skåne, Sweden. He studied at the Malmö University of Music and Lund University with composers of different styles and diction, such as Brian Farnihå, Hans Eklund, Sven-Erik Beck, Sven-Erik Juhansson, Sven-Erik Sandström, and Steen Ingelhof. His music, which is more about communicating with others than his own sense of beauty, has been well received by many listeners and has made him one of the most popular Swedish composers of our time. Open Minds was commissioned by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra for the 2005 Baltic Sea Festival. The name of the piece is a combination of "short, effective introductory music to 'start' the concert" and "an 'open-minded' selection of ideas, non-verbal expressions, and styles. The songs based on the poems of Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), who lived during the Civil War and its aftermath and spent her life as a recluse in her home in the Massachusetts college town of Amherst, are known as the works of American composers Copland and Ned Rorem. Mattinson's "Orchestral Lieder on Poems by Emily Dickinson" divides the ten poems into three groups according to theme: "Love," "Nature," and "Life," and uses an orchestration that highlights the glockenspiel, vibraphone, celesta, and harp to express the light and shade of her poems. The work is completed with an orchestration highlighting the glockenspiel, vibraphone, celesta, and harp. It was premiered by Anne-Sophie von Otter and dedicated to Lisa Larsson. The string orchestra version of "A.S. Mourning" commemorates the 100th anniversary of "Arnold Schoenberg" and his "Purified Night" of 1899, and was dedicated to Neeme Järvi and performed by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra on its 2002 Japan tour. The "Concerto for Orchestra" was commissioned for the 2008 Stockholm International Composers Festival, which featured Matthinson's music. It consists of three contrasting movements, "Con forza", "Molto espressivo", and "Amabile e dolcissimo - Tumultuoso", which are taken from his works performed at the festival, including the three pieces on this disc, and a fragment from Schoenberg's "Pelleas et Melisande". Tumultuoso (lovely and extremely sweet - noisy). King International
